Kirai

by Miura Noriko

“He seduces girls, gets them and then dumps them. He specializes in the one-night-stand. He has no interest in love or romance. Dating someone would be a pain. This terrible guy, Hanada Shintarou, is nevertheless, extremely popular. But then he meets a girl who might just be the one who can change him and his low opinion of women. The only problem is that she despises him!” (summary taken from Baka-Updates Manga)

Is this manga for me?

If you’re sick of reading about girls with no brains, backbones and dreams besides marrying the man they love, well, this is the manga for you! If after years of reading shoujo manga and you’re sick of reading the same scenario over and over again where 99% of the scenarios will NEVER happen in real life, well, again, this is the manga for you. If you’re looking for character development and believable plot-line, again, this is the manga for you.

Right on!! I love your description of this manga. I’m really getting tired of common shoujo girls (ahem Shinjo Mayu girls) who fall in love too easily and do it and expect the guy to be nice to them. Like WTH do you want to do with your life, just get married become a housewife and then what laze around at home all day routine work and no imagination besides doing it with the guy. Ahh borinnggg. Why are they so weak too ?!!

Yeah, I have similar sentiments towards Shinju Mayu’s works.

What bothers me about Shinju Mayu is her female characters are way too submissive to an abusive boyfriend who controls every aspect of their life. The girls seem to think this is love when in fact, it’s power, abuse and control from an insecure man. Makes me wonder about her own relationships to be honest.
The best example will be Haou Airen. The girl gets kidnapped against her will to a foreign country and she was completely fine with it. She’s not allowed to go out on her own and the school she attends was chosen by the guy. She’s a bird in a cage and she was COMPLETELY fine with it. I stopped reading because the plot was just getting more and more absurd.

The most worrying of Shinju Mayu’s works is this short where a girl gets saved from being sexually assaulted, ony to be sexually assaulted by her saviour. He continues to assault her everyday. His reason? He likes her and hope by doing so, she will get used to it & like him back – which she did. Excuse me??? Does this happen in real life? 99% not. I was so disgusted with that short that I stopped reading Shinju Mayu. The message she sends to ppl on what the “ideal” relationship is is just disturbing.

I love this manga and totally love you too, for picking it up again! <3

Miura Noriko is one of my all time favorite mangaka, even though or more like especially because her style isn't the usual pretty, overdone, sparkly shojo fluff (the outfit is for once totally unimportant in that manga and I worship her for that) and she concentrates on the story and character development! The simple clean lines, the great dialogue and the sharp expressions… I'm sooo happy right now and I hope to finally see how they end up after all that!
